KNOWN SUPPLY is B Corp Certified!

It’s About Community

As of this week KNOWN SUPPLY is officially part of the B Corp community! We thought we’d share a bit about why we chose to get certified and what it means for us to be a member of this community.

First things first, what is a B Corp anyway?

It’s worth a brief explanation, because it’s not as simple as we thought when we first looked into it. As per the B Corp website: “Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.” Companies opt into this certification process to prove the positive impacts they are creating with their businesses.

This certification process is available to companies globally, but there is more to our B Corp status. In 19 states of the U.S., business can legally structure their businesses as “Benefit Corporations”. This incorporation status is important because it legally binds the mission of an entity to its success metrics, meaning that benefit corporations can prioritize their impact free from scrutiny of investors or others.

Simply put, it’s a nuanced, mission-centric way of doing business.

Since we started KNOWN SUPPLY has (proudly) been legally structured as a benefit corporation in the state of California. The existence of our brand and the positive social impact we create are inextricably linked together and this status will help us to ensure that over the long-haul of our work.

The B Corp Community

For us, going through the additional B Corp certification process was still important and here’s why…

  • Supporting and being connected to the larger movement in a collaborative way is core to how we see our impact growing. We look forward to learning alongside and partnering with other B Corps to create more good using our apparel knowledge.
  • While we have full confidence in our approach to using fashion as a catalyst for social change, the B Corp assessment provides data and tools to help us ensure our impact continues to improve over time.
  • And lastly, we hope this gives our supporters (current and future) even more faith in the ways our clothing is improving the global fashion industry for the better.

Our mission: To use clothing as a tool to improve the lives of makers and help shoppers create a better relationship with what they wear.
